From the beginning the workforce was considered by all the family as the most important part of the company. In her later years, although not directly involved with the day to day running of the business any more Rebecca Pinkham continued to ensure that working conditions were ‘industry leading’. In the new Witham factory there was an ‘up-to-the-minute’ canteen, rest rooms and a surgery. A Works Committee worked with the management to continuously keep staff welfare under review and a Social Club provided recreation facilities for activities outside work. Seen as being very progressive in its day a Benevolent Fund, contributed to in equal parts by employees and the company provided additional benefits during sickness and other urgent needs.
